Title: Looney_Head build
Post by: Looney_Head on August 14, 2009, 07:18:53 PM
thought i should put up a build thread,
just an advanced warning it won't be updated very often.
back ground on the car:
i have owned my skyline for around 7 years now.
car is a 4 door R32 gtst. engine mods are FMIC, 3" Exhaust, 450cc injectors, walbro fuel pump, link ecu
also have whiteline adjustable sway bars front and rear.
so after having the car for this long i have decided to turn it into a play car.

stage 1 get the car in the garage, minus some interior:

started on sound deadening, boot was first:

interior stripped out:

sunroof is going to be filled in.

Nice Nice!
So, ermm. Is it going still? As per txt. Im guessing the Port Road was in the Civ yes? :P

I think we should have a weekend of putting together Skyline. + Beer + Rum. Maybe some skids in there somewhere too.
Title: Looney_Head build
Post by: Looney_Head on October 27, 2009, 08:35:21 AM
nah did port road in the skyline. found three things;
1) i need a diff that can put power to both wheels
2) i need new brake pads, apparantly two years of sitting round makes pads go off
3) the magic smoke in the radiator made its way out the exhaust which some would see as a bad thing :S

i think 253000Km's on a standard head gasket might be its limit, it starts smoking if its been run for a while.
if i let it cool down its fine again.

yeah i need to get it on a track to see how it goes, i don't think melling would be an option some how lol.

Awesome job Lith. :)

Curious, 202rwkw at what boost level???
Title: Looney_Head build
Post by: Lith on October 11, 2010, 09:06:47 AM
Thanks GTSR :)   Was really pleased with the result - while I figured it'd be capable of 200kw on most dynos, I hadn't counted on it making it on this one as its a pretty harsh reading rolling road dyno.  The last car I tuned on it (a naturally aspirated Honda) put down 135kw on this dyno and went on to make 156kw at a dyno day at another workshop a couple of weeks later.  The tune is not a dyno queen style tune either - most of the cars kms are going to be done being thrashed around corners etc so its gotta not get too hot under the collar.

Boost basically floated around the 14psi mark.

yeah the way it goes once on boost makes it feel like a bigger engine :D

so looking forward to using it in anger

and yeah GTSR it was just hitting 14psi which is what we were after

Congrats Looney on the result. :)

I was thinking way back when that R32 GTS-4 (forget forum name) in Wellington with similar mods (VG30, GTR FMIC, GTSLink, etc) put down around 196rwkw at 13.5-14psi? or so on STM? dyno. Was Geoff? the name of owner, owned a subie after selling that R32 GTS-4.

Interesting, very similar mods to whats I have sitting here for my car except I've currently got a RB25 turbo (which may have crapped its seals from the looks).

The response looks pretty good given most people say the VG30 turbo housing is too big and laggy on a RB20.
Title: Looney_Head build
Post by: Looney_Head on October 11, 2010, 02:06:04 PM
Sam, its laggy i don't get full boost till around 4Kish. once its on boost though... wow its fun haha

its making 2 psi by 2500rpm and 10psi by 3600ish

Needs moar cubes ;)

Certainly a better result than mine was along time ago, i think the turbos were different but who knows.
Title: Looney_Head build
Post by: Lith on October 12, 2010, 09:25:26 AM
There definitely seems to be a difference in the turbo behaviour - Phil, is yours ballbearing or plain bearing?

Another thing which has come up in another thread Jeff...  one of the guys got his RB20DET GTS4 tuned by Shred a few weeks ago and it couldn't get over 180kw with an R33 turbo.  I am wondering if the transfer case/something with the GTS4 setup does prevent them from making as much power as the dedicated RWD counterparts.

I know you "only" made about 155kw with front mount intake and exhaust on stock turbo with the GTS4 at Chequered flag if I remember rightly?  Dane and Dan were in the 160s there...
Title: Looney_Head build
Post by: Looney_Head on October 12, 2010, 11:00:00 AM
OMFG Jeff is back.... :P

its plain bearing as far is i could tell, it didn't spin like a ballbearing unit.

that would make sense re the drive train loss, the transfer case would consum a bit.
Title: Looney_Head build
Post by: gtsr on October 12, 2010, 11:22:27 AM
That's forum name, V8eta. :D

Hybrid RB20DET turbo (bored out stock RB20DET housings) has the same non ballbearing TB03 CHRA (I assume same compressor, exhaust wheels to suit) as VG30DET turbo and reaches 0 on boost gauge at around 2500rpm and full boost of 10-11psi or so at around 3500rpm (hub dyno). Doesn't seem to be much difference once stock RB20DET turbo exhaust housing is modified compared to stock VG30DET turbo exhaust housing.

What are you getting at?  Looney's turbo had 45V comp housing iirc

That they are similar, yet housings are different.

There are bound to be a variety of completely different turbos which spool similar to that.  If it were easier to put a TD05 on an RB, I think that'd be a winner on Looney's.  Similar spool - much more potential for mayhem ;)

HKS 25/30 turbo.

GReedy / Trust had bolt on TD04, TD05 Mitsubishi turbo kits for RB20DET, etc. Probably could find a stuffed RB20DET spec GReedy / Trust turbo and use the exhaust housing.

TD05h RB20's are good fun :)

Id go 3071r if i was going to do it again (not that i am - next Skyline will be of the GTR variety if i can afford it).

GT3071R = 18PSI, 286rwhp on RB20DET (Mustang Dyno).

Nearly 400whp (so close) with GT3076R on RB20DET at 24psi (Hub Dyno) -

Being a VG30 it'll be an OP6 exhaust housing I'd have thought which is much bigger than the rb20 one, no matter how much it's bored out so you'd expect worse response..
Title: Looney_Head build
Post by: Lith on October 12, 2010, 01:41:36 PM
Absolutely.  The turbo is clearly running at least genuine VG30 (or whatever) housings, if its a hybrid its based on a VG not an RB20 turbo.  Its pretty laggy but doing a bit of comparison with other plots it looks like it is not shy of flowing, a turbo Type-R Integra that was tuned to 190kw on the same dyno made 211kw recently at a Speedtech dyno day with no changes.

Post by: gtsr on October 12, 2010, 02:49:23 PM
I guess it makes sense that VG30 turbo has less response.

Would be interesting to see the rwkw result on Hub Dyno with boost plot, etc.

the most i am going to be doing in the future is the road and track series next year. no cage required for that. :jack:

mmm carbon, I'd love some carbon bits but I'm on a fibreglass budget :(

$6k that was a pretty good deal!!! For comparison I paid $9k for a wine red manual GTS coupe with lots of options (nissan mats, the fancy centre console, etc), a/m wheels, lowered, pod, exhaust, tints and 90km on the clock in late 2000.

Wish I'd known of a GTS-T for that money!

wow its been a long time since i have updated this.. so LONG UPDATE.
so i sold the 1000cc injectors cause they are going to be too small and got some 2200cc injectors.
some other parts i have acquired are:
GKtech caliper spacers

over night parts from Japan

all the bottom end has been machined, balanced, etc by colliers in Levin (awesome guys recommend them for any engineering work) and was then painted:

and other bits of the puzzle i have laying around/acquired:

120mm thick intercooler:

a little wastegate:

and a small 4" exhaust with titanium muffler:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/Looney_Head/exhaust_zps81192e7e.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Looney_Head/media/exhaust_zps81192e7e.jpg.html)

and that is what has been happening. oh and somewhere in there was another child..

currently waiting on my fuel rail to be machined up (-10 rail) then will fit manifold back on and put the engine in. and after my honeymoon i will look to get an exhaust manifold.

yeah looking at a sinco one, only other one i would trust would be 6boost.

its a Borg Warner S300 83/75 with a twin scroll .91 housing should do the trick. from here: http://www.theboostlab.com/store/products/S300SX3%252d60-.91-A%7B47%7DR-%28Straight-Compressor-Outlet%29.html

so haven't done to much on the car lately due to life getting in the way. but over Christmas I managed to get some work done.

swapped over the clutch master cylinder to avoid fouling the intake manifold:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/Looney_Head/20151229_205340_zpsvftnnr6f.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Looney_Head/media/20151229_205340_zpsvftnnr6f.jpg.html)
this is the master cylinder i used: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/nissan/clutches/auction-1010833211.htm

also finished running the VCT oil feed line:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/Looney_Head/20160109_163308_zpschxii8x8.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Looney_Head/media/20160109_163308_zpschxii8x8.jpg.html)

Note for anyone running a Exedy triple plate clutch (ie NM033SR) you will need to change your clutch release bearing carrier to a shorter one that puts the bearing closer to the clutch fork, part number 30501-02C74:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/Looney_Head/IMG-20160108-WA0000_zpszexhoolg.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Looney_Head/media/IMG-20160108-WA0000_zpszexhoolg.jpg.html)

Then this weekend i had some mates over and we made all the jigsaw bits into one bigger bit:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/Looney_Head/20160109_144813_zpsdpgsmpbj.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Looney_Head/media/20160109_144813_zpsdpgsmpbj.jpg.html)

to pretty to hide :(
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/Looney_Head/20160109_163411_zpsfvbgrxmi.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Looney_Head/media/20160109_163411_zpsfvbgrxmi.jpg.html)

and in, with turbo sitting there for effect:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/Looney_Head/IMG-20160109-WA0005_zpsssmqmodb.jpeg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Looney_Head/media/IMG-20160109-WA0005_zpsssmqmodb.jpeg.html)

and because we could:
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/Looney_Head/20160109_180759_zpsrtcxyfr6.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Looney_Head/media/20160109_180759_zpsrtcxyfr6.jpg.html)

next to do is get exhaust manifold sorted.
Title: Re: Looney_Head build

so more parts arrived. i have started sussing the fuel system which is fun.

and i ordered a Sinco manifold which has finally turned up:

hi all, i have slowly been working on the fuel system and as of yesterday it looks to be complete.

have fired up the pumps and there looks to be no leaks which amazes me :D

next is to get it back on its wheels then off to my mate who is going to do all the remaining pipe work, after that i can sort the wiring and hopefully make some brmmm brmmm noises.

pics of fuel system:
