Title: A31 on a budget
Post by: MDM on December 28, 2011, 05:16:12 PM
This has been a build that started almost 2 years ago due to lack of time and $$. This is going to be heavy on the pics and light on the words as im not big on words..

It all began when i was looking for a car and came across this A31 in below average condition but well priced. From memory i paid $2400 for it with 5 months wof left & 6 months rego so just decided to drive it untill it ran out. The plan being in that time i would find a better shell and swap all the gear over. That proved harder than i thought it took almost a year to find what i wanted .

This is where it began. RB20DET, Manual, Lsd etc etc

Didnt think of cutting the holes for the I/C piping before painting so had to do some careful drilling. Also swapped rear hicas subframe for a non hicas one.

Im pretty sure they were $75 per rim to widen or $125 per rim to widen & change offset. I only widened so was cheep as. All the brakes are standard but i do need to try and upgrade as i got made brake fade @ taupo raceway. Im not sure if bigger brakes will fit in the wheels without hitting.

5 stud big brakes only accomodate 16" wheels, no smaller diameter, i have been through all that, not sure about regular GTS-T brakes however. (non type-m)

Do you know if i can adapt the m-spec brakes to the smaller 4 stud rotors. i was thinking the smaller diameter disc may allow them to fit within the wheels???

you mean like using a bracket to bring it closer to the hub centre? (i.e. going the opposite way than the usual big brake conversion bracket (something like this http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/toyota/brakes/auction-437016868.htm)
could be possible if there is no interference issue.
i don't know what you have but you could go r32 gts25 (single pot with bigger disc than gts) or r33 gts25 (2 pot), both should fit 15" wheels.

Yeah thats what i meant. I will have to get a few different calipers and just try it and see if it is possible to make up some brackets to suit.

Yeah just standard 4x114 rims. I think for what they cost they are pretty sweet rims atleast until i can afford something sweeter in 15x9

No point in that upgrade sadly, I have a set of non-type m brakes here and they are the same as GTS / Cefiro brakes except with a 5 stud disc.

You could look into U13 4WD SR20DET Bluebird front brakes as they run a twin pot calliper & the disc is bigger than standard A31 but a little smaller than the 4 pot discs, they have the same 100mm bolt spacing on the calllier as the A31, the discs are 4x114.3 and they ran a 15" rim from factory. With some uprated pads & maybe sloted discs that could be the go.

If the motor you put in you car (transplant) has a cat from factory then you must have a cat of the same standard fitted to the car you put your new motor in

Stripped block, had a massive time getting the inner crank pully off. Consumed about an hour of my life due to rusty build up. Everything looks alright rings look new, bearings a little worn, still has hone marks on bores but i think they are factory ones..

Im going to get my engine rebuilder to relocate my tentioner bearing as i dont want to fail. I will also get him to fit crank collar. I will give the bores a light hone myself.

My mate ownes one of the Pitstop branches so he made it for me and i just paid for parts..

The first exhaust without the cat cost me about $400 ish but that was with a stainless mandrel 45deg down pipe which was quite expensive just for that bend. The stainless muffler is a high flow v8 style muffler, flowmaster i think. 2 1/2 inch all the way.

The second exhaust is also 2 1/2 inch just rebent to clear D/Shaft loops and fitted a highflow cat. That cats are meant to flow 10X more than stock cats.

Hope that helps.

Mine is a little droney but i think its because i only used one muffler. Maybe a reso would stop the drone. The muffler i used is good though because its fairly quiet when im just driving normal but makes a good amount of noise when i put my foot in it.

Got all the parts back from the engine reconditioners yeaterday. block, cradle, crank, pistons, rods, pick up all acid dipped. Crank polished & collar fitted. Piston ring groves cleaned, shot peened & gudgens checked. Tensioner stud repositioned. I will fit the oil restrictors myself. Got all parts except bigend bearings which will arrive mid next week. Will give it a light hone this weekend then start putting it back togeather..

Gave the bores a light hone. Dont think it came out to bad having only done it once before. Got the crank and pistons in as well.

Looking good so far! Honing with a hand drill, any concerns about keeping it square?

Its pretty easy with that sort of hone. Its more of a de-glaze than a hone. the tool pretty much centres itself providing you use the drill as slower speed as possible and keep your strokes even. Cheers

Started on the head yeaterday. All well except the bolts in the exhaust cam keepers where seized in the keepers. Unknown why or how but got them out by very slowley unwinding them bot cant get bolts out and damaged one trying. Yay get to spend more money getting more. Other than that gave it a good clean, very light valve lapping with some fine paste.

Enjoying following this build up, you're pretty thorough!

Did you just use the fine paste to lap the valves or did you do it twice (coarse then fine)?

Cheers mate. I just used the fine paste, they looked fairly good so didnt see the point in doing both. I got a neat pot of paste that has both in it though coarse at one end and fine at the other ( prob been round for ages but i have never seen it before )

Long block all togeather except lower cambelt cover. I also need to make up a piece to fit between the two covers to fill in the exposed space. Should get intake mani sorted this weekend and all aux. Still need to sort injectors and ECU but that should be it. Just have to build up the motivation to pull the motor out again..

A bit more progress. I got the flywheel machined again because im pretty sure it was out of balance after the first time and it has some pretty wicked heat spots on it. Got new heater, fuel and water hoses. Got a spiggot bush from nissan for $10 aswell. Thought it would have been more genuine.

Started to re-wire the injectors to suit Bosch injectors. Gave the engine bay a clean up and started preping the wheels to be re painted.

Picked up some parts to relocate the battery into the boot. I went with       35mm double insulated cable instead of 25mm because a few people told me i will get less voltage drop due to the length of the car. Only down side is i had to buy 10m of it. I was thinking maybe running the earth the length of the car as well should provide a better earth.

I was thinking maybe running the earth the length of the car as well should provide a better earth

No, if anything it will provide a worse earth, im sure the entire chassis will flow more current than your wire.
just sell what your not going to use....
How much? i might be keen

Yep i decided not to run it the length of the car, i figured the body would provide a pretty good earth. I will let you know when i have done it how much is left, cheers

Painted the sub frame with POR15 so it will stay nice and shiney. Fitted all new hoses and braided lines before putting the motor back in today.

Awesome. :)

Edit: Also with those injectors on RB20DET, most use new stock O rings. Just something to check (O rings) when installing them to make sure they don't leak.

I'm, only at page 1 and I feel like I need to comment already; I have NEVER seen anyone do a rebuild/restoration like this on a Cefiro ever before, bravo sir!

When I saw the first shell I face palmed and was like ohh noes; then you got a mint shell and everything escalated really fast lol.

Also Is that a Plasmaman intake manifold? If so that's a nice piece of kit! And you're engine look super clean and tidy, I hope that's a good turbo and not a cheapy!

Keep up the good work, pretty sure you're in the running for worlds tidiest Cefiro build!

ps. LOVE the steelies! haha.

Cheers dude,

im going with the do it once do it right thing.. but i must let you down.. Intake is a copy but for $300 it was the best option & turbo is a DSR.. I will hopfully have a Masterpower on it early next year. Everything else has been done to a fairly good standard. The title  ( A31 on a budget ) has gone out the window...

Cheers mate, the plenum is fake.... Yeah the engine bay is very hard to keep clean. i did about 1500km with the 20det in it and it was filthy. i polished and waxed it while the engine was out again so hopefully it is easier to keep clean.

Yeah, sure are pricey aye. One thing the aussies do right, its putting nice subtle kits on cefiros over there. Seen a few nice examples.

I just got a facelift front like your's for mine, look alot better than other type. Now im just considering what kind of front lip to put under the black peice too.

What is the plan for your car? track/street?

Cheers.

I have actually gone off the facelift bumpers. i liked them when i got the car but now want a non facelift one. I have read that a mitsubishi Diamante front lip turned upside down fits a31 bumpers. Car will mostly be a street car with a small amount of action, im taking it to powercruise this november in taupo so that should be fun.

I ran it with the DW injectors and seals but it was flooding and would barely run. They sealed sweet while they were in there but it wasn't for long. My tuner has said just run it with 20det injectors  ( no boost ) to run it in abit before i put the DW injectors back in it and get it towed to the tuners..

Bit of an update. I did a 500km run in then did the clutch again. I upgraded to an exedy 5 puk race clutch. It was pretty awful to drive at first but I have gotten used to it. Wired the z32 afm in, put some new plugs in it. Fitted the 750cc injectors. Then towed it out to torque performance where there fitting a nistune board to the ecu and tuning it. They said I will be looking at 260 - 300kw. Will update with dyno sheet and video when I get the car back.

whats the update man? :D

Hey mate,

Update it a bit of a down buzz. I ended up with 176kw at 16psi. its not shy of half what i wanted.. The problem is the exhaust side of the turbo, its onlt a .58 and it needs to be at least .74 also the exhaust is only 2.5" with a cat ( which is a high flow cat ). Basically back pressure is way to high and is not letting the motor/turbo breath. at least thats how i understand it.

On the up side it has 800nm of torque which is plenty. I was at Powercruise last weekend and going down the main straight i was loosing traction shifting from 3rd to 4th which is awesome but pretty scary going fast in the wet.

all and all it is a good car to drive around town as its on boost at about 2500rmp its just a bit sucky and surgy as you wind it out..

When i get some more money togeather i will put a proper turbo and external W/G on it with a decent manifold and a 3" exhaust but for now i just want to use it.

Cheers for the interest..

Will post dyno sheet and more photos tomorrow

Here are some photos in no particular order of what i have done since the last photo update..

Removed the standard 20det clutch after i ran the motor in and fitted a excedy 5 puk clutch. Broke the top hose fitting off the radiator ( not very impressed ). Wired in Z32 AFM. Took it to Torque Performance and had a nistune board fitted and a custom tune done. Got half way through shimming my spare diff. Did the front brakes. Went to powercruise. It rained.  If ive missed something the pics will explain.

Now i just want to get out and use it.

have you managed to put the re-shimmed LSD in yet?
ive just done one of my diffs but havent had a chance to put it in, wondering how you like it and what total shim size you have packed in there?

might have missed it somewhere but what were the power results?

Hey mate, i did get the diff dont but still havent put it in yet. The motor actually dumped all its oil and ran a bearing so i focused on getting another motor in it. I will hopefully have it in, in the next few weeks. I will update on how it goes.

I used one shim, pretty sure it was a 0.8

Hey mate, yeah I had a 20det in the back of my garage so I put that in, got a wof then put it back in storage. Its been there ever since. Still haven't put the diff in either.

I just bought a house so its kind of taken priority and sucked every last cent from my bank account....

I am pretty keen to get it out and take it for a thrash.. do the fri night meets still take place?????

ended up selling my shimmed diff and went pull the one in the car out last night but ran into a few issues with one of the axles so still keen to hear how yours goes :)
