Title: Marks RB26 Cefiro
Post by: SKDSUP on February 26, 2012, 07:30:37 PM
Thought i would chuck up some photos of a Cefiro that i picked up recently.

Got it for a pretty good deal, is under green sticker apparently, (old owner removed the sticker) for being impounded.

Plan is to get it legal, and use it as a street wagon at this stage. Give it a good general tidy up, and new fluids all round.

Requires certification, new tyres, driveshaft hoops,- does anybody have specs / drawings that i could use to make some up?

One issue i found when filling it right up today (fuel guage also doesnt work), is that as it was almost full, it spewed probably 5 litres of fuel out from under the tank area-like it has a overflow or someting silly, got hold of the old owner, and he thinks it may leak out the sender hole or something? I am going to have an inspection tomorrow, just thought somebody may know.
Just got me a little worried as the exhaust hits the ground a little over bumps.

Speedo will probably need to be calibrated too, appears like its a fair bit out.

RB26 89,000 k's,
R33 5 speed,
5 puk clutch,
rebuilt LSD,
Mines ecu - old owner says it made over 400 hp but boost contoller has been removed and is only running 8psi now, estimate 300hp.

R32 GTR wheels,
D2 Adjustibles,
Rear swaybar upgrade.
GTR brakes,

Hoops need to be made from 50x6, 4x M10 bolts holding it in, need to have plates on the inside to stop ripping the bolts out, needs to be with in 150mm of the uni joints.

I look at this and regret not buying it now, good luck with it:). Stick with it, don't let it end up like the laurel. I'll have to check it out next time I'm home

nice buy man. i had a 26 in my A31 before deciding to strip it all into a S13. the issue with the low exhaust will be that the factory twin turbo front pipe is quite long and hangs down a lot lower that the factory rb20/25 front pipes. what i done with mine was cut out nearly 2 inches on each pipe to lift the whole front pipe up.

if you were near would of been simple to just pick it up from me. im not needing it anymore, but it is a simple fix.

Bit of an update, finally got a day off today to do some work on the car.

Removed towbar,
Removed fuel tank, looks like it has had a real bashing. Where it joins in the middle, it appears like it could be leaking around there.

Removed pump for a general inspection too, now the fuel gauge doesnt operate at all, and there is some hell dodgey wiring going on in this area, for example, there is an exposed (twisted together join) that runs the fuel level float-its a yellow wire, could this be part of the reason i am not getting a level at the dash?

I am having a auto electrician rewire all of this, because im pretty unhappy with the ghetto-taped up joins everywhere.

Also, 3 bolts (8mm) out of 6 holding the fuel pump cover down in the tank... :splat:

So will replace tank, all o rings, some parts of the fuel hoses, as they look shot too, probably fuel intank filter on pump if i can buy one by itself (?), redo wiring, then should be a little bit happier.

Also while underneath, spotted a custom complete 3" stainless steel exhaust, first time i had had a decent look underneath. Non-hicas too, which is a win for me.

Would update photos, but my dslr is playing silly buggers, and isn't being recognised by my computer anymore :(

Had a silly idea of selling the car, and it is up on trademe, but upon reflection it will just require a little bit of work, then cert. So i think i will definately stick with it.

Got a little more done today, renoved all intercooler top side piping to try fit up the hard pipe kit that came with  it. Didnt really fit up too flash so chucked the old stuff back on.

Removed the two drive belts for replacement, and also removed fuel filter to put a newie in.

Removed bumper support as spied a bit of surface rust, scratched it up, primered it, then painted it in gloss back and fitted up.

Looks alot better.

Thats about it for today.

Last night got some more done, removed intercooler, battery, and radiator overflow as it was broken and all ugly rusty. May fabricate a custom aliminum unit to go in its place.

Found alot more taped up joins around and into the fuse box aswell.. :boohoo:
Have got a friend who wired up the 25DET Neo into my laurel coming over at the end of the month to completely rewire all this crap.

Intercooler had a fair amount of oil in it.. put this down to blow by from the breathers up top recirculating back into intake?

Otherwise, steady as she goes. Will endevour to get photos up of progress.

Just a couple of updates,

Another fuel tank has arrived,

R32 GTR intercooler fitted up just on the silicone at the moment. Hole saw and grinded bigger holes to suit, then rust convertered area, and paint.

Complete new intercooler piping too.

New HKS filters and intake pipes, as the old filters were plain **** quality, and full of crap. Happiest with this buy!

Radiator drained, and removed for 2 x electric fans to be fitted from Nick at North Shore Toyota.

Showing some of the crap mild steel piping that was on it.

And old i/c.

This gives you an idea of some of the waka-spec wiring in this thing, this i think is the main alternator power wire. Directly under the fuel lines.. :headbutt:

New tyres, and new driveshaft hoops.

Cusco magnetic oil filter to fit

Greddy magnetic oil sump plug.

Also fitted new BLOX 50mm aliminum wheel nuts, and found one absolutely munted wheel thread on the front left hub..

Got 2 electric fans on the way, so will fit them on my radiator, then fit tank, AFMs and filters. Then next weekend my friend Rob is coming to sort the wiring, hopefully everything is ready to rock then! But for now i have work all weekend :dozey:

Until then..
Cheers

Had today off work so got stuck into it.

Fitted my radiator fans up on my radiator, then refitted radiator.

Cleaned intercooler body holes out a little more as pipe was close to fouling on the body, will fit door seal around the diameter of the holes to look tidier later in week.

Jacked front end up and noticed a slight oil leak, maybe from the rear main seal. Also noted complete stainless front pipe which is cool.

What isn't cool is the washers that are spacing up the a (?) arms so the front sway bar clears the sump. Will chuck a pic up in the next couple days of this.

Fitted up HKS intake filters and AFMs. Noticed the gauze was near poked on the inlet side of AFM, also think the old owners have just siliconed sprayed the **** out of the engine bay when they have cleaned it, because there is mass build up on the inside of the afm, not to mention the thick amount of crap everywhere in the engine bay.

Achieved a little today, getting there, next thing this week is fuel tank :splat: ..

Cheers

Bit of an update.

Got car completely rewired by my friend Rob. Does really tidy work.

Fitted up new tank, doesnt seem to have any leaks which is great, however fuel gauge still not working, changed over fuel sender and float parts but still not working? only thing i can think is that maybe the float is stuck on something..

Got some new wheels, pretty happy with the fit, Work Rezax 18 x 9.5 +31 out back, 18 x 8.5 +31 up front, need some slip on spacers up front to clear the brakes. All tyres will need to be changed, going to go for some 215-30-18 all round i think.

After having the car rewired, its runing terrible.Seems weird, only thing i changed was intercooler and piping, cleaned AFMs thoroughly, and this hose here, this was plumbed into the former intercooler piping, but doesnt seem to draw vacuum or anything. The rubber hose runs in up under near the oil filter.

Car wont boost, runs terribly, only just idles and is gushing over fuel richness out the back. Now i ran a multimetre on both the afm's, and they are both drawing similar amps (?).

This is the weird bit, when i had the wiring done, Rob had me run the numbers off the ecu to check what the computer was from as he was interested, turns out the ecu cover is R33 GTR RB26 , and the internal parts of the ecu is R33 GTS25T RB25DET, the ecu has been wired up to run off 1 afm?

Im really confused as the car was actually running ok before, unless the afms by me cleaning them, and putting new intake filters on are registering silly readings now i just dont get it, or the new intercooler has chucked the tune right out?

Plan at this stage is to get the car ready to be mobile, and sell this motorbike i dont use, to help fund me a wire in link extreme.

Thats about how it sits at the moment. :jack:

I wouldnt bother fixing the dodgy ECU just get a link wired in a dyno it - watch the power figure sky rocket and then watch the power poll come towards the side of your car.  Be fun :)

Thought i'd update this, even for my own future reference of how its come along.

Lots happening of late, finished my apprenticeship in maintenance mechanical engineering, so finally a tradesman, pretty happy i stuck to it. Bought a house, so moneys pretty jewie at the momet, but managed to secure a awesome 3 bay garage on the section that will be perfect for me!

Short story, had it up for sale again, decided to do a compression test, turns out no.2 cylinder is at 20psi at cold.

Oh dear :( .

So cannot sell it as it is like that, simply because i dont want to shaft anybody.

Rang local engine re-builder caraid in CHCH, and had a talk to a chap Paul from there. Will be pulling motor in next few weekends and sending it across to them for a complete overhaul, and hot side inspection too.

Hopefully the motors not too far gone, have discontinued even running the car in fear of doing anymore damage to it.

May have to run a hone in on the bores, and oversize spec some pistions.
Either way, it will be a good starting point knowing ill be having a fresh motor.

So, the story is, pull the engine, overhaul it, probably end up having a big bill because ill want single turbo set up etc etc etc, then street bomb it dirty styles on a run in, before having some fun track days. ( it wont actually work out that easy i bet ).

Here is some updates.

Stickers wil be being removed, a few of the guys had some stickers made up, makes for terrible viewing, and its not the style i want to go with the car.

showing new ultra racing power brace

showing new rear 4 point ultra racing rear brace

mount points of 4 point rear.

Will be removing back section of exhaust to flange by diff as rear muff is buggered, and will run a blast pipe for the haters.

Sad motor.

Have square headlights on the way form up north, stupid hard to find, to replace the ugly bulb circle style like every other cefiro on this land.

Dropped the rear suspension a little, but not really digging the fit, so will case some 20mm spacers out back, to replace the 8mm slip rings i have now, should bring it out enough to be happy.

Finally, this little critter here has been taking up alot of my time, and keeping me awake at nights.

Thats about it for now, motivation has been replenished, pretty guttered i got sold a dud car from a so called friend, but thats how it goes. Possibly my own fault for getting tunnel vision when i saw it, and disregarding how cheap it was, and not doing any mechanical tests first.

Anyways, until next update. :jack:

Being that this car wont probably ever get put through cert, am thinking of chopping out the steel inner guards, and tube framing a radiator support, which will bolt to side of engine bay chassis to help with engine removals in the future.

Rang a local certifier, and tube framing is not aloud from what i understand, because it is affecting the frontal impact parts of the chassis.

Been throwing a few ideas around, and doing a little research on the internet about it all.
Also been reading a very good thesis over at nissansilvia.com, regarding braces and chassis flex. http://www.nissansilvia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=513856&st=30 its at the bottom post of this page and is open to download. Very helpful.

Got pretty busy last sunday on the car. Removed intercooler, drained radiator, pulled all wiring through guards.

Will take hot side off this weekend to get near dump pipes, then go for an unbolt after the bellhouse bolts have been taken out too.

Planning to paint the bay a wild as colour, my old laurel was bright green underneath, and looked pretty effective, so just running ideas through the brain at the moment on what colour.

Am going to replace all arms/crossmember up front as looks like its had a hit up front.

I put the 9.5" rezax up front for a look, and with the 25mm spacer it look spretty good. So when these came up on trademe, i couldn't help myself..

Had to get my mits on my rebuild money savings, but that can wait a little longer... 18 x 11.5 +19 work rezax, a little different style, and painted black face. Am going to send these wheels to Elite in Chch to get resurfaced like my 9.5"s, and pull the black off them too.

Pretty happy with the fit out back now, if a little mexican. Just bought a new guard roller, so a little rollout will help with that.

My headlights turned up, look great-alot better than most other circle style ones. Will work well with my new facelift bumper, facelift grille, heading towards my revised front end.

No body kit here*.

Until next time.

Cheers

(*) - unless can find an genuine autech kit.

Light up date,

Must be an early christmas in my house ...

Been stocking up a few little parts, if anything this build has gone the complete opposite to how it was destined when first got the car, was supposed to be a low budget build ... thats how it always starts ...

Title should be changed to Marks RB25 cefiro, as have bought a low k's RB25DET neo, done 94 k's thats currently sitting in my shed.

Few parts here to get ready to put in..

Nardi woodgrain,
C's Garage 555 knuckle design, lca's, and crossmember modification,
Takata harness,
Nolathane bushes to rodeja(?) and back,
new link arms and bushes on the sways,
GKTech castor arms.

Waiting ( loooong wait...) on my fixed Bride artis III to show up now to couple with my harness, will be after a rail if anyone knows of any!

Also, was an ants nat away from buying these this week... think i have a japanese wheel fetish haha. Bang on sizes and offsets though..

Currently as car sits im waiting on spraying the bay, went away from a loud paint colour, have gone for an aliminum fleck silver, and am going to add some sparkle, will save that for a post photo though ...

Also trying to chase down a genuine works bell quick release, - but would settle for a Sparco if anybody knows of any!

Until then.

Mark.

Thanks alot man. I did buy this from a new found friend at the time, who didn't do the work, but his friend before him did, and the hole car was so terribly put together.

I learnt alot of things about set-ups with my previous laurel, and am planning on expanding with new ideas for this car, unfortunately, it needed a bit of love :o , although in the pain and anger, at the end of the day its what i enjoy doing strangely. To be able to stand back and admire something you have done and be kind of happy with it is a good feeling. Although, i think im a little ocd with having things just right.

The person who did the work to this car, should be banished from touching something ever again.

More to come very soon.

Thanks.

Very productive week.

Relocated crossmember turned up today, along with my Sparco quick release, TiAL external and extreme low mount seat rail for the Artis.

As my knuckles had also turned up from Joel late last week, decided to refit them to the hubs.

First one was no worries, bearings felt good, second hub, not so good. Quite rumbly and more resistance to turning. So decided to carry on with my 'do it once do it right' motto, bought 2 new bearings, and the infomation is as follows; (first time trying to change hub bearings)

To suit S13 hubs, (12mm shock mounting holes, and believe the spindle shaft is smaller than s14/s15).

30mm hub nut - remove.
Nut washer- remove,
hub should slip out easy enough off the spindle,
press old bearing out of hub, now this takes quite alot of force, 12 tonne to be exact, so wait for the crack because it will come.

Push them right out, clean all your parts up with brakekleen.

Grab your new bearings ($86 each side from Wilson Bros. Chch)

I heated the hub outer with a light propane torch to aid in fitting,
Set your hub thread side down on some rubber matting which is on hard wood,

Put some light oil inside the hub and using a 50mm 3/4" drive socked, press fit squarely theouter race of the bearing, - the 50mm socket is perfect, clears the outside of the hub, but enough to get the outer race. Have your rubber stepped seal side facing into the knuckle !

Push that girl deep, deep enough to clip your snap ring back in.

Flip her back over, knock back in any studs that have come out of the splines,

Fit dust steel covers,

Anti seize the spline.

Hub back on the spline, nut washer on, tighten nut to 135 Ft. LB on your 3/4" torque wrench. (Recommended torque for s-13 hubs)

Feel good about yourself for changing your own wheel hub bearings.

Was my first time, any comments/critisism accepted.

Bearings are as follow to suit s13 hub.

NSK

Hopefully this helps someone out in the future or whenever.

This weekends plan is, finish prep in engine bay. :dude

Layed over the glitter for ****ts and giggs. Looks good . For some reason photobucket is making my photos look terrible.

Slight issue with steering rack not reaching relocated member as has been modified. Think there is an adjustment near the universal point however.

New lock sussed, is pretty impressive. Needs custom solid steering bush made, as rack being moved forward required an extra 25mm in the shaft.

Also going for A32 maxima inner tie rods as have furthermore extension than these ones, and new outters, if anybody has any idea on how to change the inners or a guide i'd love to have some help!

That's some serious lock, backwards entry time.
Title: Marks RB26 Cefiro
Post by: base on November 05, 2012, 07:53:47 PM
To change inners you need screw driver hammer and crescent big one and some cable ties it's easy with the motor out not brake the metal tie slide the boot out of the way then undo the nut that holds inner and outter  together then with screwdriver  and hammer tap the metal plate so you can undo the big end that goes into the rack  then do it in reverse and use the cable ties to replace the metal ones and go crack a beer
Title: Marks RB26 Cefiro
Post by: sk8seddon on November 06, 2012, 07:33:22 PM
that photo of lock is cheating. you dont even have steering rack bolted to the knuckle lol.

i changed to a32 rack ends and they wasnt long enuf to get proper alignment (i have longer lower control arms for more camber and wheel clearance) had to find longer tie rods too. you will probbly find you gona hit caster rod prity quickly.
Title: Marks RB26 Cefiro
Post by: 4ever_sideways on November 06, 2012, 08:05:46 PM
I don't think it matters that the rack isin't connected considering the lower control arm has been scalloped so that the tie rod end fits into it. It's the knuckle itself hitting the stops which limits the amount of lock on these ones.
Title: Marks RB26 Cefiro
Post by: SKDSUP on November 07, 2012, 09:52:54 AM
Doesn't matter if the rods not hooked up, as John explained its the lock stop hitting on the knuckle thats the limiting factor, and as it is in those photos the rod hooks up no issue.

Yeah, looks like the castor arm fouling could be an issue on the other side.

I have been advised by Joel form C's Garage and he is sending me A32 inners, with new S14 outters to suit the 14mm inners.

Well, had steer rack fitted with new a32 inners and s14 outter ends, picked up the rack and its been damaged... pretty sure it wasn't like that before i had the parts fitted... however..

So now, the longest wait is finding someone who will sell me this broken peice.. i dont even know what its would be called.. bottom universal cover/flange? its got 2 opposing star key bolts and looks to be a casting.

I know it looks dirty, but I've hoped to try build it to a better quality than the general cefiro you see on your street.  And in photos it was straight out the dirt floor shed haha. It will clean up good I hope.

Im hoping to be able to fire it within February.  The initial build got out of control.  What was originally going to be a quick tidy up ,spiralled into a o.c.d orgie when I laid my eyes on the **** quality work that was done to this thing.

No awaiting to be finished is intercooler piping,  exhaust from cat back.

Then things I want.

*whiteline adjustable blade rear sway and new bushes/links
*2way lsd
*quality rear cambers to square things up

*tuned

And that would make me happy... for a short amount of time.

Peep the red tint. Not sure if digging it or not yet..

Rear pillar brace has arrived from streeter in japan, shipped out of Okinawa on a friday morn, arrived at my door on the Monday lunch!

Japanese international shipping is incredible, I struggle to get things from Auckland in one week!

Cars going well, need another alignment as want to set about -2 degrees in the back to gain some clearance.

Word on the street this thing may be competing in a new series in the south island towards the end of the year. .. but probably not.

Locked 4.3 is in the cradle, hooks up 3rd. Similar power to a laurel I used to have, , estimate ~250 hp atw

Contemplating getting a high flowed turbo, turning the wick to over a bar to make things more interesting orrrr may just retune as is yet.

Cant decide.. I need to refrain from wanting to drive this thing... im convinced ill get in trouble with the feds...

That right there is my issue. I was at home last week for 2 days and I did nothing but drive mine. Thought she was all over when the 5-0 pulled into the do-duck bakery while I was getting lunch. Guess he didn't spot that the reg and wof has 2012 on it...... As I left the inside wheel was skipping all the way up that little hill onto the main road lol, cheepy china tyres squealing like ****. No you send C's your stuff and they cut, shorten then weld your knuckles.
Don't see how that combo will increase lock. You'll increase track width. You'll need to increase rack travel and grind your lock stops

Tough to say. Depends on the certifier. I wouldn't go for them any way. They are one piece (not cut and weld). But Kyle Jackaway broke one late last year I think. A knuckle/ steering arm that breaks before the tie rod? No thanks!

Oh, ok. Interesting. That seems really high for a factory performing engine. Anyways, the next step would be some injectors,  and a wastegate upgrade of some sort, and a more freed up dump section.

It gets worse on the knock maps, up to 100% duty.

It's for road use, so higher duty cycle doesn't matter as much (short burst's, mainly low rpm driving). If for racetrack you wouldn't let it go above 80% for injector reliability, as engine is up to max revs lap after lap.

When selecting new injector cc, take into account them being at 80% duty.

About exhaust, bellmouth dumppipe would help and be best.

Can buy a cheap bellmouth version here, but can't guarantee it won't crack on the welds (flexi in front pipe helps to avoid this cracking problem, similar to as used with Honda exhaust manifolds) -

http://drivenperformance.co.nz/products-page/dump-pipes/rb20-25-turbo-dump-pipe-r32-r34-3-high-flow/

More expensive is HPI in Japan, but you pay for that quality.

So ditched the big wing, decided to go.DMAX boot spoiler instead, I think the hole big wing thing is sold out, plus if I connected with a wall etc it likely would have ripped my boot completely off. And the main fact my car doesn't have enough grunt to need the down force generated.

Paint early in the new year hopefully, trying to make a decision on a couple final options.

New tool box was a good birthday present, the #1 approves.

Until then.

So how's this for digging up a dead thread, the forums look particularly quiet?

Paint still hasn't happened, but bodywork has gone ahead well. +30 dmax guards shown here with the 11.5s on for shits and gigs. Suprised to report that they actually fit.

Won't be using these up front though. Really itching to get paint laid down, fingers crossed next weekend.

Pukekohe for final of d1 next month, which will be exciting if anyone of you are going would be good to see you all!

Decided to take the time and give my wheels a good clean, the ones I had made by shaun at apexeffects hadn't actually been cleaned at all since I had them, so took a good couple hours on each until I was satisfied. Picture shows all my Vskf.

This will be the final photo I want to show until the car is finished but basically this is it bar a few little extras.

The front will be dropped back to 21540 on the 9.5s,  and I will pull the front down an inch or so.

I was targeting 27th June which was another streetmeat drift day at ruapuna in chch but it's looking more and more unlikely now.

There is word a heap of South island cars are trekking north to taupo in October for a cool event though...

Until then ✌

Looks insane mate, one of the best looking Cefs in NZ imo! What event is down in Taupo, might have to align my North Island roadtrip with it and stop in :)

Car is pretty much complete, (it will never be really over, will it?) 3 and a half years or so since the initial update.

Not really too sure man, last time it had alignment was around -5 but it's alot more than that now as I pushed the plates right out on the adjusters
