Title: Osiris's R33 GTR
Post by: Osiris09 on March 28, 2012, 10:01:53 PM
Thought i would post some pics of my gtr on here. Been slowly doing things on her since i brought her last year.

This was its first day home. Was extremely happy as you can imagine.
Was hugely different to my ute and alot of fun. Previous owner had done a few stupid things which i set about fixing.

Engine as it was

And then 2 months later i heard a little bit of a tink noise and lost power. Was not thrashing or anything. was slowing down into 70km zone at the time.

This is what had happened!!!!!

Of course i diddnt know that at the time. After towing it to Shred in lower hutt all the way from the hawkes bay i found out the issue and the slight failure that had occured. Boy was i pissed. Had only done 110,000km

That of course had some lead on effects such as......

Due to the fins being sucked back throught the exhaust valves.
After stripping the engine you could tell the previous owner/owners had not cared for her at all.

This was the oil pump. Would say it had very infrequent services in its life
(http://i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n494/Osiris20091/GTR/227099_152679198133447_109206365814064_355091_4849273_n.jpg)

So now it was time for the rebuild. The block was basicly f****d so decided with the guys at shred and a bit of prodding from stagefumer to go RB30 instead as would be a similar cost in the end.

Block coming together with its new arp headstuds

Bit of work being done during the rebuild.

Engine back in the car ready for the dyno. Time to start getting excited :jack::jack:

Dyno sheet once it was going. Quite pleased really

These photos now are of it after i got it back and started adding my own bits and pieces and probably far to much polishing. :jack:

And finally the engine bay as it looks now after having the strut brace painted and buying the sticker to go back on it. lol :D:D

Still a bit to do. Want to change the radiator at some point, the radiator overflow + the washer bottle to alloy and make an alloy cold air box with air scoop similar to standard and an air diffuser infront of the radiator.
Still have to lower it, get new vents for the bumper as mine are missing and want to change the front indicator lens to clear instead of orange. Im sure theres alot more too but only think of things as i do them and every time i open the bonnet. lol :jack: Oh and replace the air conditioning as mines missing and the air vents just suck hot air right off the motor and it gets damn hot in the car...

So thats my car. Still a work in progress but getting there. I now realise why i have no money. But what better things are there to spend it on??

Looking good, you've done a nice job on the engine bay. Is it still on standard suspension, looks mighty high?

Yup all suspension is still standard. Trying to figure out what brand of adjustables to go once I've got the cash. Won't go real low. Prob only half the distance between wheel and guard now. And that 1st pic was on a hill and angled sideways 2 so it looks even higher.

nice gtr :D what pistons did you end up using for your build and what sort of turbo is that?
Title: Osiris's R33 GTR
Post by: Osiris09 on March 28, 2012, 11:05:54 PM
Not sure on the pistons. Would need to check the invoice. Not forged though. Wasn't that rich as I had just spent it all on buying the car. The turbo is a scarles gt3540. Would like to change it to a Garrett 3540 or a t04z though. The turbo is at its limit I think as it was a cheapy in comparison to the Garrett. Guys at shred thought I might get up 2 100 kw more by going with a better turbo and a couple other small changes.

was thinking that 310 is pretty low for an RB30.  My stock RB26 with cams makes 283 @ all four hubs.... !

Very clean tho!  I've just bought some Tein Superstreets so could either do you a deal on my slightly lowered suspension (not adjustable) or do a search on here as there may still be sets of Teins available.

EDIT: did someone steal your N1 bumper vents, or has it just had the holes cut in there??  can sort you out a deal on those too ;)
Title: Osiris's R33 GTR
Post by: Osiris09 on March 28, 2012, 11:41:30 PM
Yeah 310 is at all 4 but could always be higher:-) :-) :-) . Suspension really depends on cash situation. I keep spending my savings lol. The vents were missing when I brought it and when Nissan quoted $400 per vent haven't really looked much further. Been slacking off but it would be nice to have them in. And then just repaint bumper and change front indicators and I will be happy

Would like new suspension. My rear left shock is on the way out. Has a slight bang going over bumps so could be keen on what u have even as a temporary for me until I can afford some adjustables.

Hi Osiris.

Dam that is nice what you've done with her, pity about the previous owner and damage. Smart thinking going with the 30 after the 26 let go.

ummm, think you may have misinterpreted someones explanation or may have gotten confused, im not sure its even possible for the fin chunks to get Sucked back into the engine, id say its more likely something went thru the intake side, did all the damage and screwed the turbo on its way out

Oh what a swt setup - no matter what people say I still love a R33 GTR.  Good work on the build after the bad luck. Should have kept it real though stuck with the beautiful revv'ing RB26 :P haha each to there own.

Nice rebuild, bet she's a lot of fun :)

She's going to screeam once you can get a decent turbo in her ;)

Plenty of power in the interim though eh :D

Man, an R33 GTR with an RB30 and a big single turbo - I am damn jealous right now, very cool.  Have you upgaded the cams, or are you going to?

If you are in the position to, live out my dream and get yourself on of the awesome new turbos available these days - there are some fricken wicked T3 flanged ball bearing turbos from Precision and Forced Performance that make the likes of the original Garrett GT3582R and T04Zs a bit outdated.

Indeed,  that car is one of the vehicles which convinced me on the HTA turbos - before being on the RB30 turbo was on another mates EVO which it also performed really well on, though the EVO was only a 2litre and running on pump gas so wasn't really doing it justice.  A 3litre and/or lots of boost with good fuel and those things can make ridiculous power with good delivery.

There is a bit of info on the net about this. im not the first. Only rear 3 cylinders were damaged after rear turbo failed. on decel there is enough vacuum to suck stuff back in. And the pieces in the piston that were dug out were definatly ceramic.

A couple of new pictures. Just installed some suspension in the weekend. Just R34 Gtr Dampers with Tanabe lowering springs but made a huge difference compared to what it use to look like. The old rears were so worn so this is a huge improvement. No more banging over pot holes or shuddering in tight left corners. Also tried installing the air con. Turns out that there are a few differences between the standard 33 and the gtr radiator and condenser setup. So got the pump mounted anyway and back to looking for the gtr rad and condenser + lines setup. Will get some better pics next time its out as it was a bit wet this weekend for good pictures.

Yup been looking at a few but need to save like everything. Saw a few nice rotas. Just have to get rid of these ones. They are perfect offset for a standard skline but the guy who owned it before me put 40mm spacers on to make it sit out like that on a gtr.

Added a torque brace today. Liked the look of them really. Had to import it but dont think its really ment to fit an rb30. It slightly touches the fuel rail. So next weekend it will come off again and i will get a custom made engine bracket thats a little higher than the original. Had the worst time getting the original engine hanger off. Ended up buying $50 of tools from supercheap so i could remove just 1 bolt. lol. At least i have them for next weekend hahaha.

Trying to decide on new wheels too. Any ideas for me to check out?? Any one want DTM hiros when i get my new 1ns?? they are 19 x 9.5 at 45p. You can have the 40mm spacers with them too. lol

I like them too. But the offset is completely wrong and 40mm spacers are illegal if i remember rightly. Last owner just diddnt think about this when he put them on. So i need to find something new.

Got around to doing a little more on the car today. Not much but enough to keep me busy.

This is one of the Air diverter plates from That Harry Connick Jr Guy. They look good and easy to fit so if any ones interested in them contact him about them. Good price too.

After fitting the plate i got around to testing out the new bracket i had made for the torque brace as it was fouling on the fuel rail. Modified it a little more and now it is ready to paint and fit properly when i see the car next which hopefully will be wednesday as i have something coming for the car to fit. Cant wait either to see how it looks. Trying to decide whether to paint the brace black as well instead of the blue to go more with the theme under the bonnet.

Yeah man wasnt a problem at all. Or at least nothing compared to doing the torque brace bracket. That area is made for hands much smaller than mine. Will be interested to plug in the laptop when i take it out again and see if there is any temperature drop while driving.

On Nurburgring R34GTR they had what looked like foam guides (I assume to not damage radiator, etc) on left, right side as well. I think it's making a high pressure zone that helps guide, force more air through radiator, etc instead of that extra air going around radiator, etc.

So I got a package in the mail yesterday. 4 to be exact . Been waiting a little while for them to arrive. Damn Public holidays lol. This is what was in the packages. :jack::jack:

Rota Grid2 19x9.5 at 15p. Decided it was time to get rid of the hub extenders so the car was safer and a little more legal. They were 40mm extenders put on by the last owner.

They were fitted today. They sit about 1cm closer in under the car than they did before but still look cool. Also with them being in under the guards a little more there should be less stone chips down the side of the car. Would of liked an offset of 12p but never found anything that was within my limited budget.

Full load of guys from SDU will be more than enough to lower it :D looks real nice and gets rid of the huge/illegal spacers. Dont want it too low, it is a GTR after all. What suspension has it got?

base    what was the off set on the hiros? and was they 9.5 all round?

The wheel offset is 45p hence the spacers on the gtr and yup they are 9.5 all around.

One day when i have money (probably never lol) i want to get coilovers for it but for now it will stay the height it is. It has r34 dampers with tanabe lowering springs. The originals got swapped out a few months ago as they were rooted.

Next problem for me is that when the tyres were swapped from the old rims to the new ones the guy found that 3 of them had sausage shaped bulges on the inner edges and were delaminating on the inside. They were almost new when i got the car and still heaps of tread even now. so i know they were cheap but guessing they cant take the power going through them either. I was recommended not to do 200km/h in them lol.

So i have to save for tyres and want to buy more shiney stuff for the engine bay (think i may have a magpie gene in me haha) SO then after that coilovers and other random crap i see that takes my fancy. Maybe a garage for the car at some stage with room attached for me and my crap.:laugh:

Awesome engine, love 26/30s its the best combo ever

What kind of coil overs were you thinking?

Wow they must be pretty crap tyres, what a stupid ex owner. What kind of tyres are they?

Mmmmm shiney stuff in the engine bay is always nice, but the garage with a room sounds even better. That way you can sleep beside your baby and know its safe haha

I was thinking tein superstreets or something along those lines but will see down the track. Yeah uncovered alot of issues leftover from previous owners. Not sure what the tyres are. will check in the weekend when i get it out. just always knew they were crap.
Haha yeah in the perfect world i will get a garage and shiny stuff but we will see.

Definately go teins, only way to go. Yeah some tyres just dont feel right sometimes and at least you got told the max speed to take them (not that you could legally on the road haha)
Haha which ever comes 1st cause they'll both happen eventually, they are a must have for a GTR haha

Since we diddnt end up having our meetup today (I swear us wellington guys couldnt organise a pissup in a brewery :p:p:laugh::laugh: haha) i decided to tackle 1 of the three things that have been bothering me for a while. No point in going overboard aye. Any way my drivers mirror has never folded in since i got the car. Its not a biggy but i like things to work. And so i decided it was time to fix it. I knew it would be a bitch as you have to take the door card off then unbolt the mirror then disassemble the mirror. (includes pulling the glass off by hand out of clips which is a little freaky!!!!). The parts manual makes it look so easy haha. It ended up just being a contact like i thought but what worried me was what i found when i took the mirror off the door. As you can see in the picture. Luckily this part is a bolt on inside the door panel which makes it easier to replace but i wonder how many of you guys out there have the same issue. Theres not a whole lot of strong steal left in that part to hold the bolts. And it looks worse from the other side haha.

Lucky you found that now instead of finding it when your mirror decides to blow off on the motorway!

How you gunna get it fixed? Definitely start by sanding the rust and anti rusting it, im in dire need of doing a couple places on my Skyine but too lazy to haha

As for hardpark, i like the chassis/year order. It'll probably be the same place, unless theres a carpark just as big??

That part is actually a bolt in beam that runs up the door. I may just buy a new 1 haha. Will see how much it costs. In the meantime I just cleaned it up. Need to find some rust kill. My biggest worry was breaking the mirror as you had to pull the glass off by hand as its clipped in. Normally my luck means it would snap haha.

After i fixed the dash rattles this weekend (thanks again guys for your help) i decided it was time to put a battery cut off switch in place as i was getting sick of disconnecting the terminal every time i was done using it (never sure when i will be using it again and it goes flat so quick just sitting there). Dont think it turned out to badly. I cant get over how expensive the switch and cables are though. Glad super cheap had 25% off on saturday. And yes it only has 3 bolts. That would of meant buying two packs of bolts haha. Who sells a packet of bolts with just 3 in a pack honestly. Even no.s people!!!!:laugh::laugh::D:D:D

Cheers guys. You are right about the cam cover. It shall be changed at some point. Not sure when. Its funny i have arguments with people when i open the bonnet and say its an RB30 and they say na gtr's diddnt come with 30's and your cover says its a 26. lol. why argue with the owner i will never know. :-)

The bolts diddnt come with the switch. it was an individual pack. the switch came with what looked like wood screws and i couldnt stand them sticking out of the metal so i brought the bolts. but they only sell 3 in a pack. also i couldnt find any M5 bolts that were long enough so i drilled out the switch to M6. All up with the 25% off sale i think it cost me $75 all up but i needed more gear than i thought. The switch was half the cost. Then i needed a new battery terminal as they  dont sell cables with small enough terminals. Couldnt use the old terminal and wire as thats fastened by two small bolts to the chassis. I had been putting it off but im glad its done now. I wasnt sure where else to put the switch. And it was way too hot in the weekend to be picky about where i put it haha.

Since it seems almost impossible to find hose separators for -16 braided line i thought i might try making my own.

(http://i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n494/Osiris20091/DSC01497_zpsfb029136.jpg) (http://s1136.photobucket.com/user/Osiris20091/media/DSC01497_zpsfb029136.jpg.html)

This is my first and it is far from perfect. There is still much polishing and tidying up to be done on it. Im Just trying to decide now if i actually like the look and whether i should make more. I kind of want to re-route the hoses too but that means altering or creating a new catch tank which i cant be bothered with right now.

What do you guys think?

I did learn today while making it that you should use a drill bit rather than a hole saw (Striped nearly every tooth as aluminium doesn't clear like normal steal) and aluminium is a bitch to cut with a hacksaw. Started it in the machine hacksaw but the steel gummed up the blade (Same as hole saw) and so i finished it by hand.

cut a small piece of rubber tube and place it in the middle of the tube then use a cable tie to loop around the outer edge through the rubber tube then around the other hose then back through the rubber tube and do it up. this is how i space hoses i hate those bulky looking spacer things lol.

Bored yesterday so made a couple of videos:

Dash LED's in the dark

Trying out my 2 new cameras. A Sony DSC TX30 and a Rollei 5S action cam (similar specs to gopro but half the price)

Just have to decide if i like mounting positions.

Car failed a warrant today because it has an intercooler. And intercoolers have to be certified according to vtnz. Last time I checked gtr's have intercoolers from the factory. Now I have to go somewhere and prove that the intercooler is a standard part.

LVVTA;

Front-mounted intercooler  The front structure of the vehicle has not been modified, and
 the front bumper structure is unaltered (cosmetic changes are permitted), and
 the components do not present any forward-facing external projections, and
 none of the frontal impact components have been removed where the vehicle is
required to comply with a frontal impact occupant protection standard (see note on
page 1).

No mods on the front of my car. All still standard so don't know what there problem is. Maybe it was his time of the month.

Sounds like it. Double check with the standards above and if all good as you say then go back and tell him he's an idiot! Another VTNZ inspector giving themselves a bad name...and these are the ones who are meant to know a thing or two about the rules.

Definitly no mods. I've never needed to do anything to the front end. It hasn't changed in the 3 1/2 years I've owned the car. All uses standard mounts. I'm guessing he didn't know a gtr had a full front mount compared to the small 25t intercooler. 90% of my warrants have been at vtnz  so you would think someone else would have picked up an issue. Most of the time the guys are fine and only ever had one issue with car tinting but that was because vtnz light meter was not calibrated which was easy to prove. I prefer going to them because I can watch the car through as I like keeping an eye on my car. I think the guy just took exception to the fact it was a modified car and tried to find a reason to keep it off the road.

One of the worst place to take car for a WOF as they don't allow you in and have a closer look. Find a normal WOF place where they allow you to go under the hoist.

I personally do a visual inspection when car is up on the hoist during WOF - I take the chance to check all bushes, links, drive shaft bolts, brake pads, brake lines, oil leak etc

Sorry cant help with Intercooler issue but can you not get Nissan to confirm that GTRs comes with a bigger cooler from factory?

Im just going to take it to where i get the work vehicles done. He has done it before but means taking it to work on gravel roads. Just annoyed at how someone can complain when they obviously dont know the car. He also turned around and said i need a cat converter in exhaust and that my exhaust pipe from turbo is too big. Nothing about turbo though. Also said that my tyre were stretched which was a fail. All of this has not changed since i brought the car. Guess im just venting

Wow she's looking amazing. Been awhile since I've been online and its good to get my fix haha.

How did your wof go? I cant believe they failed you on a standard fitted part yet they didn't notice the extensive work to the motor. What muppets. Ive also seen people pass with structural rust, bent chassis', stretched tyres and even vented screamer pipes! Wtf!

I took my bumper off yesterday as there are a few things I want to do to it to tidy it up. I had never managed to get it off until now even though I was sure I had all the bolts out. Turns out some bastard had glued it in with no more nails.
Bastards lol.

Bumper is all back on now. All no more nails is gone. Looks nice being repainted without the chips in the paint. I decided to paint the splitter a different colour. the colour is similar to the wheels which is what i wanted. Now im wondering if i do the spoiler baled too. Hmmm so many decisions. Vents are now in too which makes the bumper look way better and finished. I also made new intercooler mounts as the old ones made it rattle at certain revs.

Vents are neat. Have you really blocked off your intercooler or is that just masking for the paint job?

Cheers guys. It's coming along slowly. Still got a while to make it to the level of your r34. No intercooler isn't blocked off. I didn't paint on the car. Everything was done while it was off. I'm not sure which bit you mean?

My new goodies turned up for the car today after almost 2 months of waiting and it's only been 9 months since I last had it on the road. Fingers crossed the coils fix the problem.

Ok so new coils, coil loom, and plugs do not fix my misfire issue. It only happens when it's hot (about 10-15 mins of driving) and only as you accelerate/hit boost. It will do it on the odd occasion when it is idling after it has been driven. Any new ideas could be helpful.

Do you still have AFMs or MAP sensor? If you have AFMs try cleaning them and secondly check the wiring on the plugs.  If you still have them try driving with O2 sensors disconnected.

So I've been doing a bit of research on how to test an ignitor module. As far as I understand it is basically just diodes. The picture shows my resistances and voltage of the diode test. It would seem to me that I'm getting resistance in reverse which could suggest that the ignitor is faulty. Does anyone have an ignitor they could check with a multimeter to confirm this for me?

Get a j30 one, more modern and goes right in! Just have to swap the 6 pin and 7 pin plugs around as ground is different. The wire outputs are all marked anyway so is really easy.

Title: Re: Osiris's R33 GTR
Post by: benji-nz on September 04, 2015, 07:46:04 PM
Yeah fair call. The trick is the little buggers can also systematically fail. Mine could and would, work, not work, work for 2 days, die and not start for days, work etc etc. When I too checked the resistance it was faulty, but figured I would have it double checked by an auto electrician and it was fine! Painful times I'll tell ya!
Title: Re: Osiris's R33 GTR
Post by: Osiris09 on September 04, 2015, 09:00:25 PM
Yeah the auto electrician says it's fine too. But they aren't checking it the same way and not under heat. Mines only after 10-15 mins of running then I get a continuous stutter under boost. Thing is unless the transistors in the ignitor are something weird they shouldn't be giving a resistance reading in reverse. But without a spare it's annoying having to fork out for something I might not need. But if it is I'm going to have a go at rebuilding it. Nothing to lose really.

I thought about pulling mine apart, but apparently it's full of resin type stuff making it impossible. Mine cost $50 from a wreckers. I know the pain of just wanting to borrow one and having no one around! If I have time I'll see if I can pull my stuffed one apart so we can see exactly whats inside.
