General Skyline Discussion / Mechanical Engineer help needed !
« on: January 06, 2013, 10:30:11 AM »
mungyz, thanks for that.   The trailer I've posted there does indeed raise the car up over the top of the arches so you can enter and exit the car with no issues at all and then lower it down for transport.

I guess I liked the idea of what I posted, but to be honest I'm open to any other alternatives that we can make ourselves and is easy to load a low car onto as our car won't fit on a traditional trailer due to the front splitter and overall height of the car.

Hi all,

As the title suggests I thought I'd post here to see if there's any experienced mechanical engineers out there who might be able to help us out with our trailer build for the NSX ??

Here's a video of the type of thing we want to build  and need some help to understand what the exact design will look like so we can make the parts required so that trailer can lay down as required. I know the basic concept of having the axles on a cam type system, but don't have enough knowledge to be able to "reverse engineer" things from the video but I'm sure someone a lot smarter than me can help us out !! LOL

I don't mind if you do this for a business and invoice us for the time taken, in fact I'd prefer that to cash deals so everyones happy........ of course if you just want to be part of the team and help out for free then even better !!

We could purchase one of the trailers on the video from Australia, but they're pretty pricey even when converted from Aussie dollars and then to get it here and pay all the duty etc just makes it unrealistic........

We didn't have any understeer at all mate........ and we had one of the country's best development/race drivers doing the testing with us (he works for Motorsport services)......... we'll be fine.  Besides...... adding more rear grip will only add understeer not fix it........

We have a reasonable amount of knowledge in our team so I'm sure we will get the most out of it.

gtsr, I have no idea what you waffle on about sometimes !!

We have smaller swaybars to put on the car......... we have plenty of "pros" around but no one can give you advice for Manfeild from the other side of the world.   What they gave us was a base to start so we worked from the base and found we needed the smaller rear swaybar......... there was no understeer at any stage of the day.......

PS I need to apologise for taking over this thread.......... I'm sorry for whoever started the thread about the Manfeild day..... didn't think about what had happened here till just now... :(

I guess I can put it on track by asking who might be going to the next STM trackday on November 24th...... ??  We're already booked in.

Well if 2 weeks ago was an awesome day then I'm struggling to find th words for how good today was..........

Steve from Frost Motorsport joined me and my "pro" driver friend Aaron Harris of Harris Race Radios to give the NSX a full test day.

The main plan was to have someone with proven skills to go over the car on the track and make sure it wasn't doing anything unexpected and then to make some changes and make sure the car was responding to those changes as expected.  Then once we'd got that baseline, we would concentrate on getting the car to a point where Aaron felt it would be somewhere good for me to be able to lap consistently but also give as much feedback as possible also.

We started off with a good base setup that was mostly garnished from NSX Prime users and a couple of others and as hoped, it was a great place to start, but Aaron felt it didn't give enough feedback to really get the car working in the corners as he'd hoped so we changed some bump and rebound settings and ended up disconnecting the rear swaybar we had as we believed it was a bit too much even on the softest setting and then Aaron went out and straight away dropped 2 seconds off his previous time.........  We will fit a smaller rear bar and reconnect for next time out as we think that will give us the ideal mix.

Here's my first attempt with my own camera so sorry for the outside exposure, as mentioned I'd never had the camera in the car before and didn't have time to adjust for the day, but now I know what needs doing I will get it a bit better for next time.    Also the first time using the Trackvision software to overlay the dash info, but some of it isn't working, like RPM so I'll try and figure that out, but for now it will do I think !! :D

A massive thanks to Aaron and also Steve for taking the time off to help make a little boys dreams come true !!! LOL :D

Aaron still says there is between 1-2 seconds to be had as it was spitting with rain when he set that time and so a warm day combined with a setup better suited to his driving style and not suited to me he says he feels he could easily see that as a 1:18 flat lap so that puts us right in the territory for low teen laps with an extra 150KW or so once turbo'ed I think.....

To be honest it's very underpowered on the straight stuff.........  I was close to 50kph faster on the straights in my GTR so that's a massive amount of time to lose.........  turbo will need to get put on sooner rather than later me thinks !! :D

But I will know at the end of next friday what the car is capable of as hopefully we've had a full day of testing and got a good setup on the car and my driver can try some proper hotlaps to give me something to aim for :D

Some videos of the days fun..........  some better than others.........  the first was from Ben at STM and the others from a fellow NZ Honda member

We weren't really there for laptimes, mostly to bed in brake rotors and pads, scrub tyres, check for fluid leaks, check the AF ratios etc to make sure everything was good since it was the cars first run ever.

In the third run out I think I did 4 - 1min 24.2sec laps in a row and it was easy......   I was braking around the 200m mark on a the middle and back straights so plenty of performance in it once we start to push.

It's easily a sub 1:20 car as it stands.

Oh right....... sorry, didn't put the face to the forum name !! :D

Sorry to hear about your issues........ it's always a bugger when stuff like that happens.....  but Manfeild can be quite harsh at times....

If there's anyone other there with pics or video of my car from the day I would love to see it........

Thanks for the comments on the car......... it was great to finally get some track time under it's belt.   The day started off quite tentatively since it needed brakes bedding in and tyres scrubbing etc etc, not to mention that I was shaking like a leaf !!! LOL

Shame you didn't come over and say hi........... I always like to talk to fellow forum members.......... there was some quick Silvias and Skylines out there today......

What was your car WestyBob ???

Just helmet and some form of overalls...... doesn't have to be race overalls, but something cotton or similar is OK since they're only road cars for the most part.

I think there's only 1 space left so better get in quick if you want in.

Our car is lighter and makes pretty much the same power at the wheels than the NSX-R does at the flywheel so hopefully with the slicks and much more track focussed suspension we should be able to do some reasonable laps once it's all setup.

The car is a 1991.   Started life as an auto and we started there as they are cheaper to buy and we had a race prepped 5 speed box for it anyhow so whatever gearbox there was in it was going to get replaced.

You can have a read of the build thread here if you want to know more........ there's just way too much to list.......

We have probably another 50KG we can lose from the car once it's all up and running, but we wanted to just make things and get them looking right and working first.............. get some time in the car and worry about making lighter versions later.......... it's pretty light as it is compared to most similar track cars...... but we will take more weight out of it later..... once we've enjoyed some of the fruits of our labour !!

LOL Famous....... !   Not sure about that.......

I miss my GTR (sold it about 6 months ago to a guy in Tauranga) but I just didn't use it enough to justify keeping it......  I'm looking forward to the trackday to get some K's on the NSX :)........but it'll never be a GTR :D

It's a question I've been asked heaps but to be honest I don't have a clear answer.   Just based on what I know from talking to people around the country and knowing how many have been spotted, I would say less than 25.

Certainly none are dedicated track cars other than mine.  There are a couple of others around Wellington and at least a couple up country a bit further and about 8-10 in Auckland area.

My new road car project is going to be my our own brand as it's a kit we're customising to make it our own with a bit of Euro (engine) thrown in !!

No it's not sequential, looked into it, but there was no change out of $ 50,000 for a sequential to suit so it really wasn't going to happen !! :D

No in car videos.   As mentioned in my post, this upcoming trackday will be it's first "Shakedown" test to make sure it's all working well, so I haven't had any opportunities to make any video's yet.  Will be making some on the day of course !
