Audio, Security and Electrical / Do I need an amp?
« on: April 03, 2012, 05:13:15 PM »
Car audio is another topic about which I know very little. I have an ordinary kind of head unit (JVC KD-G386 50W front/rear 19W per channel continuous) and the stock Stagea speakers are rattling. I have some slightly better speakers out of my last car that I am planning to install. I used to think that the answer was to get higher powered speakers but I seem to remember being told that too little power from the head unit was the problem. I don't want to just go to a shop because I suspect they will just try to sell me a megabuck amp.

Are there any car audio experts out there? I don't need a booming bass in the back and I don't want to enter "sound off" competitions I just want to stick with the four door speakers (and tweeters in the pillars) but would I better to get a more grunty head unit or will a reasonably inexpensive amplifier do the trick?

Audio, Security and Electrical / Autogauge wiring
« on: February 14, 2012, 03:34:22 PM »
I bought a cheap ($5) brand new Autogauge oil pressure gauge ( to replace the expensive ($80) Taiwan made Apexi knock-off that appears unreliable) until I can afford a proper gauge but it came without instructions. The leads on the bulb are obvious but on the body there are three terminals labelled
"S" "G" and "I" - anyone know what they do? I thought that the earth was through the sender unit?

Sorry if you've seen it before but its news to me. Great looking RB30 in a jet boat. There is a video on page 2 or 3. Interesting device for tuning a jet boat on a dyno!!

General Performance / E85 and synthetic oils
« on: December 29, 2011, 04:50:52 PM »
News to me is the suggestion that E85 is not compatible with some or all synthetic oils. I have emailed Motul for some info but can anyone point to some hard facts such as formal research on this topic?

General Performance / G4 Atom anyone?
« on: September 27, 2011, 06:14:36 PM »
Has anyone (Geoff??) installed a Link G4 atom. Is it effectively as good as the more expensive version and therefore a more affordable road to a Link ecu or is there a downside? Mind you the saving is only about $300-$400.

By the time I bought my G4 plug in, air temp sensor, bigger map sensor, extra loom and paid for installation plus tidying up a couple of things (not that straightforward on a Stagea) and initial tune I have spent well over $3000.

I am happy I have got it as I will be looking for something over 300awkw but I think there is a space in the market for more tuners to get with the Nistune which is a well designed proven technology and should be able to be installed and tuned for between $800 - $1500 depending on the level of mods and tune required. For people starting out with not too much money the Nistune is ideal and if they want to upgrade the whole ecu c/w Nistune chip can be sold as updates are made available online.

Forced Induction / Garrett v Precision

Here is an interesting article (albeit from a Garrett distributor) on the differences between in this case a genuine GT3540 and a similar Precision turbo:

Aerodynamics | Paint & Panel / Sheetmetal fabrication
« on: September 15, 2011, 05:25:58 PM »
Any sheetmetal workers amongst us? Or even do you know a good one in Auckland?

My fuel system (surge tank and external pump) is in the boot but its a Stagea wagon so not isolated from the car interior.

I need a cover made up from steel or aluminium. Its a reasonably complex shape ( I have made a pattern with dimensions) which requires folding and welding (must be airtight) so needs a pro or an extremely competent DIYer.

Welding needs to be airtight and tidy but not perfect as it will be covered with carpet.

I am happy to pay a proper price for the job so if you need to put it through your business to get access to the cutters folders and welders thats ok.

General Skyline Discussion / Cusco performance parts
« on: June 16, 2011, 06:19:31 PM »
If you want any Cusco gear the place to go is the original distributor: (in Albany).

Brian quoted $570 including GST and airfreight from Japan with a delivery time of 5 - 10 days for my adjustable front camber arms which arrived in four days.

North Shore Toyota also sell Cusco but their quote for the same item was over $600 by sea - two to three months delivery or an extra $150 or so for airfreight.

Get a price off both if you want but you will find Maz-Sport's markup a LOT less!

General Skyline Discussion / MSNZ affiliated Car Clubs
« on: June 06, 2011, 12:40:13 AM »
There is light at the end of the tunnel and I hope to be back in action in my Stagea before much longer. Track days are great but I want to get into some (low level) racing as well and you need to join a MSNZ affiliated club to get a competition licence. Looking through the list there don't seem to be that many options: the long standing Auckland Car Club or the Northern Sports Car Club. I see there is also a Z club but I haven't got a Z. Does anyone know if any club is even slightly Skyline or RB friendly and which ones actively promote club level racing? I have been nowhere near the motor-racing scene for decades!!

Stagea - the Skyline wagon / M35 specific forum
« on: May 21, 2011, 02:36:56 PM »
There is quite a bit of M35 info on SAU (nb nearly all Aussie Stageas are turbo models) but there is also a special forum for these cars:
Naturally you will still come here for local knowledge and club activities!
