Okay so ive got an interesting idea!!
« on: October 27, 2010, 12:40:05 AM »
Ive got an old Mark 2 Ford Escort sitting in a shed down the line that me and someone were going to convert into a 350 chev powered dirt track car. But the guy that i went halves in the car with has pulled out and said i can keep the car as hes moving to aussie. He was the one with the brains and skills to do most of the work and me just learn and help out where i can haha but ohwell sh!t happens. After doing a bit of sanding to paint it matt black (cause that is true badass colour) ive noticed it has no rust. couple bits on the doors and boot which is no dramas. Would be a bit of a waste to use it as a dirt track car. So i was thinking about putting a fairly standard RB20DET into it. Cause the power to weigh ratio would be pretty good i would say. And ive seen a few SR20DET and for some stupid reason some idiots have put rotories in them (Wanna shoot the people who do this) and have thought it would trip people out hearing an rb pull up next to them and this little baby esky next to them instead of a r32 or something. But with my fairly basic car knowledge i dunno how much of this i could do myself and wondering how much work would this be. And if it would weigh the front down too much and mess with the handeling capabilities of the car. I have applied for a mechanice course starting next year and looking at doing a mechanice apprenticeship once its finished so that could help me but not too much cause most of it will be cuting and welding lol. But all opinions would be helpful cheers :notworthy

It's an escort, it'll handle like a boat no matter what you put in the front :p

I think the SR will be an easier fit, as well as keeping the handling more neutral. That said if you look in the picture post section there's photos of an RB in a Corolla SR coupe which is similar in size to an escort so it can be done.

Would be a cool project.

Yeah but ive driven a couple of escorts with 2 litre sierra engines in them. and i was surprised at how well they handled lowered to be honest. Better then my old VN calais commy but thats not hard cause they are rediculous! Im not a ran of SR's ive heard a few and they sound like hondas. Put me off straight away. But skid had a couple good ideas on msn just before. Buying a crashes pulsar GTIR and putting all the 4wd running gear into the escort too. Yeah ive seen a DX corolla on trademe a while back with one in it. I had to go change my pants :D:D:D But yeah ive loved escorts for as long as i can remember and as of about 10 years old when i first moved back to auckland and a matt black R32 was doing donuts in the middle of an intersection on my way home from school ive had a boner for RB's so i think its about time they come together.

I know they can handle, I owned several modified small fords - cortinas, mk1 gt capri and they handled quite well with only basic upgrades.

I was just poking fun at the old esky (hence :p)

I agree SR's sound like **** but I think it'd be way less work. That said you'll buy a RB for lots less than a SR...

Oh yeah i forgot to mention that its already got a rollcage and has the boot caged and has a 60l fueltank in the boot. So its kinda already on its way to be honest.

4 things

1) whats wrong with hondas? they a very fast cars around tracks and with the right handling mods will a skyline with 2x the power of the honda (on a track not straight line)

2) sr would be a way better choice than rb in a tiny little escort. RBs are big heavy engines and it would probably mess with the handling big time.

3) dont fukc about trying to make it 4wd. it would be so much harder than you could ever imagine. and if you get a sr engine dont get 1 out of a pulsar as they are east west mounted and it will make things way easier to just get the north south rwd silvia sr engine.

4) whats wrong with people that put rotories in them? they take up nearly no space, have nearly no lag with big turbos and crank out massive power figures?

1. I dont doubt their power and ive been in a couple civics that blew my mind. I just hate the sound of them. Would never have a car that sounded like one.
2.Yeah thats why i would say alot of people have put 4 bangers in them. I had a feeling the rb would mess with handeling. But i dunno what 4banger turbo to put in it. An RS sierra cosworth engine would be good but im not paying $10k for one haha.
3. Yeah 4wd would be dumb haha. I wouldnt actually do it :P But it was good to see skid using his imagination(Hes not as silly as he looks might i ad :D)
4.Im in the same boat with rotories as i am with hondas. They are fast for their size and weights. But too expensive. I was mainly looking at a Rb20det because you can buy one for $1000 lol.
