S14 horn wiring - More of my nightmare.
« on: July 23, 2013, 07:06:27 PM »
Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows anything about horn wiring? It's for my s14 daily though. The horn doesn't work and the previous owner reckons it's just disconnected but the earth is loose? I've pulled most of the steering wheel covers off and can't see any loose wires or unplugged plugs. I've checked fuse in engine bay. So where should I start?

Check the actual horn itself they usually break. If its a factory horn it's self earthing so you only have a power wire from the relay (check the relay itself too).

Get a multimeter and see where you have or don't have power.

Where do I find the relay? haha. Is that where the plug for horn goes in to the same box thing as the air bag? I have a multimeter but can't really check because I'm not messing with the airbag area with the power connected!

Horn relay should be in the main fuse box in the engine bay. Black 3 pin thingy

Take the horn off your r32, put it on the s14 (make sure you bolt it down to earth it) and see if it goes.

Finally got around to getting back to this. Power is in the unswitched pin of the relay but unsure of how to check relay as no other relays there like it. Can't get wheel off as there are those safety bolt things. Gonna wait til battery left unhooked for a bit before tryna vice grip off the safety bolts.

the horn switch simpily switches the wire that comes up the steering colum. through the horn ring to earth. when that cable is switched to earth it pulls in the horn relay. the other side of the horn coil has +12v to it. when the relay switched it switches + 12v to the horn which completes its circuit through earth.

So check first. the horn works. unbolt it chuck the body of it onto the negative post of the battery then put +12v to the single cable going to it.

if it works then check that when you earth out the cable coming up the steering column the horn relay switches.

if it dosent. check there is +12 on one side of the coil then earth the other side of the coil to check the relay works and the horn sounds

If it does then it'll be either the switch, the ring or the cable going to the steering colum.

Just when you think you've got it sorted. Horn decides to operate every time you're turning the wheel......

Got airbag out and this metal thing is sliding around in there. If I remove this and put wheel back together will horn work or does this thing earth it? Came out from bottom of area basically where I'm holding it.

Believe it or not, that's a reasonably common fault - that weight coming loose and causing the horn to go off while turning. Bin the weight and it's problem solved :)

I hope you know what you're doing with airbags  That circular part (called Clock Spring) needs to go back on EXACTLY the way it came off. If it has turned since removal do not refit it until the centre is turned back to where you removed it
I hope the battery is disconnected!
