Lost your Toyota Hiace lately?

Police have revealed that dozens of the popular vans have been stolen to order across Auckland in recent months in a crime operation worth $300,000.

The Counties Manukau Police organised crime team have arrested and charged seven people over the theft of 38 Hiace vans between October and February this year.

The region's crime manager Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said none of the vehicles have yet been recovered. Charges have been laid over 27 vans, with further to follow.

The seven Counties Manukau locals, including one woman, were aged 16 to 42. They were arrested on Thursday and faced court on Friday where all but a 42-year-old man were released on bail.

Det Insp Lynch used the arrests to remind commuters to "lock your vehicle, ensure your vehicle has an alarm, use a steering lock and park your car off the road".
Statistics from insurance companies show the Toyota Hiace is one of the vehicles most commonly stolen by profit-motivated thieves.

not to surprised, be lucky if they find any, they would all be in containers &/or sold in dubai by now...

the stupid thing if you stole a vehicle & sold it with in a hour to they guys who send them over seas they dont know its stolen cause doesnt show up on carjam till its reported, & due to stupid laws when you carjam vehicles you cant see who owns it unless your a car dealer or its owned by a company..

Need to have strong punishment for these crims they cost the economy so much be more like america and send them away for 5-10 years. Not give them a slap on the wrist and a gold star for being good while in court.

I would try and put together a hunting party if my car got stolen and is a reason (when i am in nz) I do not park it anywhere and if I go away its safe or has a wheel lock on it.

Steering wheel locks take 5 seconds to bypass. was watching a show like ten 7 or something. they just cut your steering wheel at one point and slip it off. alarm with 3 point immobilizer and wheel boot when you leave town is what might help.
