R32 RB25DE into HR30 Sedan
« on: March 09, 2013, 06:26:02 PM »
Has anyone here done an RB swap into their R30? My RB25 won't have a home come the end of the year as, with any luck, an RB20DET will take its place in my R32, so i've decided to make the R30 more reliable as i'm sick of the *** of an L20E that's in it and its crap fuel injection, i'd love to do a carb'd L26 or L28 but as the car is my daily and I want cheap, reliable power with none of the hassles of turbos, fiddling with carbs or the crock of **** excuse for an EFI system the Bosch L-Jetronic system on the E's and ET's, i'd rather have the RB. Its there and its mint, so why not?

I've been told to use an R31 front crossmember, is this true? If so, this will obviously mean an upgrade to rack and pinion steering, what modifications are required to the factory R30 steering and suspension parts to make it work? Also, does the gearbox tunnel and crossmember require any modification?

Finally, someone sell me a complete disc brake and R200 rear end? :D

Oh, and wiring, whats involved? I'd like to retain the stock dash if possible.

i think, a L series cross member will work with a RB. . R31 is diffrent all together to mount up right.

I know an RB almost bolts straight into a C110, so the L/RB mounts cant be far off.

I could check by attempting to put the RB20DE from my brother's parts car into my HR30 shell, but that would take some serious ****ing around and I'm too busy for such things at the moment.

Apparently R31 RB30 mounts on the stock crossmember and a 240K gearbox crossmember are the go :)

Only concerning things are my terrible drum brake/R180 rear, and the wiring...

i used r31 engine mounts and rb30 g-box and modified the stock g-box crossmember,i got a custom driveshaft ,used the rb alternater and powersteering pump and got lines made to suit the pump. mount a rb radiator, hook up the exuast and wire it up. There's pobaly heaps of other little job that i cant remember at the moment but this is how i done rb conversion. TBH im not sure it would be worth doing just for more reliability as its alot of work and money, i would just get the L20 running better.

The L20's ****ed and a gutless sack mate, original owners butchered lots and raped it, L20ETs aren't exactly a massive jump in performance either and parts for them are getting harder to find. If the original owners hadn't been so hard on this car I'd consider sticking with an L6, but the RB is a motor I know a lot more about, plus I'll have the motor, ECU, engine loom, and gearbox sitting there at no cost, may as well use them, at least I know my RB still has a good deal of life left.

i know what your saying, L20's just dont cut it as there injection system is crap. Wiring the rb ecu in is only 3-4 wires from memory and someone must have a spare disc rear end lying round.your lucky to have all the parts to do the job, i had to collect it all part by part but it only took me 12 weeks or so (working on it at night and weekends)to get mine running on a stanard ecu but mines a 30det so it wont run on a standard ecu properly and i had alot more work go into replacing the fuel system, intercooler & piping etc etc.my only real advice would be to keep it simple but it sounds like you've done your research and know what your in for.if you have any problems pm me and i'll do my best to help out.

Yeah I've seen some good ones, but mine's dying, so it'll be hung from a chain and swung off a boat for the rest of its days :p

Yeah thats why I decided on it, I just want it to run it entirely factory, and maybe later run ITBs, but that's really a pipe dream for now. Can the factory tacho, warning lights etc, all be used with the RB wiring?

Stuff like the temp gauge is no biggy as I'd run an aftermarket one anyway, it's just nice to have everything functional, particularly warning lights...

I'm fussy >.>

Yes thats all possible. factory tacho out put from ecu should drive tacho fine. to get temp gauge etc working. use the lt sensors put into the rb block. ie. temp sender and oil preassure switch.
