Who know's stuff about wastegates? xD
« on: June 26, 2014, 06:26:49 PM »
So I've been doing some thinking/research and am getting a proper wastegate source/nipple welded onto my intake pipe from the turbo to intercooler, as at the moment my wastegate is using the inlet manifold for its boost signal, which is bad because it see's vacuum.

Now, my car has a 38mm turbosmart external wastegate (top mounted turbo) which normally comes with a 7psi spring. My car has been dyno'd and showed only 4.6psi max boost, which is confusing me.

Could my wastegate be FUBAR'd due to seeing vacuum from the inlet manifold?

Would best way to fix this be an EBC or fix/replace the wastegate if it is ****ed?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

:)

No idea, looked legit when it was up on a hoist.

Was on the car when I bought it.

It also came with a manual 2-stage boost controller from turbosmart (which I'm pretty sure is legit), so I'm guessing it's legit.

could still be legit, it is possible the previous owner purchased a 5psi spring to put in the wastegate in order to keep boost level down and prolong the life of turbo/engine etc,
Current Rides:
1996 R33 GTS25-T
1990 E39A VR4 EVO 0

Nothing better than the feeling of hitting boost.......................and still thinking you have control!!

I highly doubt that due to the hori boost controller and the way they hooked it up.

I'm sure they weren't thinking about prolonging the life of anything when purchasing an external gate...

My boost signal comes from a nipple I drilled and tapped into the compressor housing. What is your set up ...turbo, ecu etc - can you post a pic of your engine bay?

How much boost do you want ?  Can you pull your wastegate apart and see if there is any obvious damage? Get a spring from Turbosmart to suit the boost you want.

Does your two speed boost controller actually do anything?

If it's still for sale buy sub boy's Link and use it and a mac valve to control boost!

I ripped the boost controller out when I saw how it was hooked up aha, never used it.

It's literally the stock turbo on a top mounted manifold, so am only looking at 9-10psi

Can't really afford to buy a link ATM, but can get my stock ECU remapped/tuned by NZEFI for less than the cost of a link.

This is an old photo but not much has changed.

Mine was always from the intake manifold, so was also seeing vacuum.
In fairness I only ran the car for a few months before pulling the engine out, but it didn't seem to have any issues with dealing with vacuum.

Tial actually say do not use the inlet manifold as vacuum can damage the diaphragm of wastegates.

TIL.
Will make sure to put my wastegates onto the boost side when the new engine goes back in lol.

Is that a copy HKS BOV venting to atmosphere? Stock plumbed back would be better!
Anyway open up the WG and see what's inside. You may be able to buy a new diaphragm if necessary. I am not familiar with Turbosmart but you might be able to identify the spring by its colour or something. In any case get hold of Turbosmart or their local distributors and get a new spring.

Are you running a Nissan 25 or 20det turbo? it looks it, if its a 20det turbo there is a nipple factory fitted if its a 25 item I would basicly take the front comp hsg off and get a nipple tapped in at either of the 2 points that are actually pictured.

if its making 4.5psi boost it has a 4.5psi spring or 5 or what ever
